mild ranting about musicals

(Anonymous) 2015-09-19 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
...and one of my professors. So I have this professor. She's a nice enough lady, but she's kind of getting on my nerves. The class is Youth Theatre, so we have to see a few children's plays over the course of the semester. I knew it was a long shot when someone asked if the university's production of Into the Woods could count as one; fairy tales or not, it's not really aimed at kids. Sure enough, she at first said no, but then changed her mind when a few more students said it would make things easier for them. Then someone asked if they could see The Phantom of the Opera. Without even hesitating, she said it was a wonderful play for children and that we should all go see it if we get the chance.
Don't get me wrong. I'm a crazy phangirl who's seen the show more times than there are students in the class, starting when I was 12. But I wouldn't by any stretch call it a children's play, certainly not moreso than Into the Woods. Yeah, I know a big chunk of the Phantom fanbase is teen girls, I was one. But still. Am I missing something?

What the fuck? Phantom of the Opera is NOT appropriate content for children. Teengers yes, but not young children.

Yeah I mean I guess it depends on what you count as "youth" theatre (some things would be appropriate for older kids but not the younger ones etc etc) but generally I would not count PotO. Some people think any musical will be child appropriate, though you think a theatre professor wouldn't.

I guess if there is a problem with not a lot of legitimate children/family shows (Annie, Wizard of Oz, Matilda, stuff like that?) being put on in your area I would give it a pass like she did Into the Woods, but idk, its a stretch.

Seems like she might be sort of overly eager to get the students' approval, and so will just agree with anything they suggest? Or, alternatively, just personally enjoys those musicals and doesn't care if they're not actually relevant to the topic of the course?

Both scenarios are pretty annoying.

I hate teachers who are the former. Ugh.

That's mindboggling. I probably would've started screaming and crying in the theater if I saw Phantom of the Opera as a child. Maybe the teacher misheard or had a moment of mental confusion and thought the student asking was talking about a different show?

No, that's ridiculous. Neither one is "children's theater," and your teacher is defeating the purpose of the assignment. What's next on the list of kids' plays, Sweeney Todd?

I mean, it's probably okay-ish for teenagers... but children? No. It's not a children's play.

I mean, I grew up with the musical soundtrack and have been a fan for ages... but there is some serious rapey subtext to it. Hell, it's just text.

Your professor is an idiot.
