But gender is more important now than it's ever been, what with the world slowly understanding more that gender as a social construct and as such, gender identification is a very real issue.

And I agree somewhat with the OP because, in my mind, there will always be characters who I will remain male or female. I can't envisage a female Hannibal Lecter or a male Miss Marple and it's not because they are linked to their gender (well, perhaps Miss Marple is) it's more that...I just can't picture them being genderswapped. I don't even think I can really go for a trans-Miss Marple, I definitely can't with Hannibal Lecter.

That all probably says more about me than anything, though...
