A friend of mine just did a Tolkien dissertation! Something about the influence of medieval philosophers on his LOTR, since Tolkien was a medievalist himself.

If only my geeky fantasy interests were significant enough to justify academic research to my academic supervisors haha

Tolkien would make great disserations. There are so many things to pick from. I went for that because it combines my interests in history, criminal justice, sociology, and psychology into one. And, in general, I'm very interested in trauma. And I think Tolkien, having experienced war, understood the different affects it could have on people (comparing Frodo's anti-war stance to Maedhros' increased violence and obsessions for example).

NAYRT but Tolkien had hella much to do with war. Actually wrote a paper on this in college for a class, mostly focusing on the WWI stuff (lots of WWI poetry stuff) and Frodo's quest in LotR. Suggest reading Great War and Modern Memory for a good overview of WWI literary themes that, while it doesn't mention Tolkien explicitly, it's really easy to draw the thematic parallels.

That sounds like an interesting book. And yes, Tolkien's experience in war clearly colors a lot of his writing (in LOTR, in the Silmarillion, and even in the Hobbit).
