Reunion with old friends

(Anonymous) 2015-09-20 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you ever caught with old friends and been disappointed?

I had a truly bizarre experience the other day. I used to hang out in high school with a bunch of dudes, they introduced me to a lot of videogames and anime. Sort of started me off in fandom, really.

Anyway, one of them wanted to catch up, so we finally met up over lunch. Things are going fine, we're chatting away, and THEN it takes a nosedive. He starts going on this long, massive rant about gamergate.

I don't think I can communicate just how much I do not give a single flying fuck about gamergate. I was over it before it was even a thing that existed.

I outright said to him: "Look, dude, my opinion on gamergate is that I don't give a fuck about gamergate."

And he just. kept. going. Just on and on, about "tumblr hugboxes" and "ethics in journalism" and how militant PC and women are ruining everything. (I'm a woman, btw.) And how he'd written this angry concerned letter to the videogames magazines. He sounded like he was in a cult or something.

I keep trying to change the subject. He thought I agreed with him and didn't seem to pick up on my 'WTF' expression. By the end of it I was just sitting there facepalming. I have never cringed so hard in all my life.

I was actually a little angry by the end of it. For context, I work with older kids with severe disabilities. Some of the shit these kids have to deal with... It's pretty fucking ludicrous to be told that the biggest problem in this world is the struggle of gamers against the eeeeevil journalism-tumblr-feminist illuminati.

Eventually I managed to change the subject and make a hasty retreat. But god damn. It feels like we've changed so much. It's kind of sad, because they used to be such a chill group of friends.

So, F!S. Tell me all your awkward reunion stories!

It sounds like he hasn't grown up yet.

yeah... pretty much. he only just got his first job. i don't think he has a lot of hobbies other than playing video games. he's also very depressed, so i sort of feel sorry for him.

i get the impression he has a lot of frustration, and he's just decided to vent it at a target (in this case, women)

Oh man that sounds awkward as fuck, I'm sorry. I hope your old friend puts down the kool-aid and grows up someday.

I don't have any stories quite that bad, but... I was out with a group of high school friends and caught an old acquaintance scoping out my rack. I was wearing a v-neck sweater and not even a very low cut one so it's not like you could actually see my cleavage, I don't think. It wasn't so much gross as it was weird.

Sounds like you handled the situation the best you could. Some people just have no self-awareness, or awareness of the world around them.

I don't have a story as irritating as that, but I was kind of sad to find that one of my internet friends had become a HUGE conspiracy nut, to the point where they believe Sandy Hook and the Boston marathon bombing were total set-ups.

I didn't have the nerve to ask how he'd feel if he'd lost his loved one, only to have some random stranger doubt and question the events, but fortunately I was able to make the point that while speculation isn't a bad thing, believing something too strongly with no real evidence to the point where you feel justified in hurting someone else is special kinds of fucked-up. We only game now and sometimes talk about random every day things. But it kind of sucks, because we used to be able to have semi-deep conversations about the world and life and now I kind of fear having any kind of serious conversation will lead to OMGZ!!11 teh shotting wuz a HOAEX!!!!!111eleventyone

Oh well.

ugh, man, that sucks. i've had a relative or two sucked into that kind of thinking through facebook. the whole "there is a one-world order" thing. most of them are older women.

and... isn't Sandy Hook the primary school with the little kids? D:

Ugh, that's so awkward.

I met up with my best friend from HS a few years after we parted ways, and it was just... bleh. I could not see what I had seen in her. We had nothing to talk about. It was more awkward than meeting a random stranger.

Kinda sad - I don't have a lot of friends from HS that I'm still in contact with at this point...

I recently saw a friend I haven't seen in a couple of years and it was very disappointing. We used to talk about music and movies and TV and books and art and other interesting subjects, and she used to write really great fiction, and now all she ever wants to do is talk about her diet. BORING
