I agree with you on 1), but when it comes to 2)...no thank you. Even the people who made Ant-Man admitted the ants were super CGI and kid friendly because real ants would be horrifying up close. Insects are gross and creepy.

C J Cherryh wrote a book called 'Serpent's Reach' in which humans live with an alien insectoid species called 'majat'. They are hive-mind creatures who are very ant-like, to me. And very, *very* cool in the book. You might want to check it out.
