A small part of that may be due to changes in "children's television." Well into the 1980's, it was common for TV stations to play old cartoons, that had old pop culture references. And not just stuff that was contemporary then. Chuck Jones really liked opera and Romantic music, for example. And these cartoons were run over and over again, too! So a kid who watched Bugs Bunny, Droopy, etc, would get echoes of old pop culture references that way, and maybe they would go on to seek out old movies and songs.

With so much new (and "educational" barf) children's programming since 1990, some of that has been lost.

Yeah, old cartoons are a great example. Then it seemed they started airing all new or revamped material around the millennium.

I just went and had a look at the "Classics" section on Netflix; it hasn't changed almost at all in 2-3 years and just about everything in every other category is 90s or later. :\
