If it makes you feel any better, the youtuber Markiplier wound up restarting his game TWICE (once when he was five minutes from the ending) just so he could save everyone. So you're definitely not alone on that.

I'm not a big fan of horror games, but this one did seem pretty cool, both in terms of story and mechanics. I'm kind of glad a secret for it showed up.

Ah, I loved watching this game! I watched a really good Let's Play of it. They saved all of the characters except Matt. Poor, poor Matt.

Most of the let's players I watched did the game, lost some people, and did a'screw that I'm saving everyone ' version as kind of an epilogue. So you're in good company!

I wish this game wasn't a PS4 exclusive. :(

I understand the compulsion, hell I've restarted certain segments of Dragon Age and Mass Effect games because I screwed up a character interaction and couldn't carry on with the choice I made. With a game like Until Dawn if I lost a character I liked, you bet I would restart from where I messed up just to keep them alive.

That's me in Dragon Age, I reload as a rule when something goes down that I don't like or that don't suit my character, don't even care. Unfortunately, it seems like in a game like Until Dawn, you have to start from the beginning to change anything. I couldn't handle it, I'd ragequit, lol.

Oh man, I thought there might be some save-points where you could go back to but if you have to play the whole game over again? Idk, if I really loved the character I might do it but it would be so frustrating to be near the end and then have your fave die so you have to do the everything again.

I think this is a pretty understandable impulse. Both the resetting and the self-loathing afterwards. But it's worth is Anon. You saved Jessica. I don't even want to think about what I'd do to save Ashley.

Meh, the Walking Dead games have already done stuff like this. It's nothing new. I don't know why everyone is falling all over themselves over this game.

I replayed the last mission in ME2 and even looked up hints because I didn't want to lose everyone. I don't even regret it.

I think that's OK.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-23 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Huh. From what I read the game has a really rapid auto-save to prevent people from doing just that. I guess it's not so quick on the draw as advertised, but it's very likely that not wanting to start from the beginning is what deterred less fortunate players. It's really not uncommon to redo parts of games. It's the video game equivalent of keeping your finger on the last spot in a choose your own adventure book, which is why the creators boasted that the Until Dawn would prevent people from doing that.

Most people who restarted this game had to restart from the very beginning of the game to avoid certain character deaths. So they had to replay the game just to get to that decision again...

(Anonymous) 2015-09-23 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
it does have a pretty good auto save but in some instances you can catch it before it does (before the butterfly symbol comes up)

(Anonymous) 2015-09-23 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
To be honest, I would do the same thing. I am a game perfectionist and I want the best endings!

(Anonymous) 2015-09-23 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
You're lucky it was Jess, the game has a really rapid auto-save causing people to start over from scratch just to save people.

Also you are far from the only one who cheated. My SO exited during Chris' first choice thinking he made a mistake. Turned out it was rigged anyways, so it didn't matter. Then in the last 2 minutes he accidentally killed 2 people.

In my playthrough I reloaded because I accidentally killed Chris in a failed quick time event, so you are far from alone. I try to do the genuine thing too, but I'm just so bad when it comes to character death.

I've seen a few LPers do that and am sure lots of other people have done the same, don't worry about it. There's one called Harshly Critical who went back through it making the opposite choices and failing as much as possible, which was really funny at first (incompetent ultra-douche Mike is hilarious), then just awkward and bizarre. The choices don't matter as much as they're supposed to, and there are some flubs. That scene of Mike and Sam reacting really dramatically to "bodies...lots of them!" makes no sense if you haven't gotten much of the cast killed, for instance.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-23 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
no matter what you do in this game, you can't have done as badly as Geoff from RT did

sending poor Chris straight to his death right after Ashley, how in his mind did that seem logical

I mean, Ryan wasn't perfect but at least he only killed the easiest to kill, Matt. I wanna be mad but honestly watching Slaughterhouse Geoff spazz out and kill the teenagers made my week.

EDIT. Actually I just re-watched it and Ryan killed Jess and Sam. What a bunch of goobers. But at least they saved Emily, amirite.

My first playthrough, I let all my choices ride and ended with only three survivors (Sam, Matt, and Chris). It was only when I was doing my dedicated "everyone survives" run for the trophy that I started cheating, and I had to start all the way over for Jessica, too. The compulsion to ram Mike into trees was so strong I got poor Jess killed, haha.

Same with Sam at the end, but I managed to restart fast enough that I didn't have to start all over.
