Bands become mainstream because people like their music. It doesn't matter if you're an early adopter or a late starter, as long as you like them.

Honestly, as long as you're not actually *saying*, "I liked them before they were mainstream," No one's even going to bat an eye. It's the attitude that makes someone a hipster, not their actual interests. Everyone has interests.

Agreed. I know that with fans who "liked them from the beginning/liked them before they were mainstream" it's the whole, "We were there first!" thing that adds to the thrill of them being fans.

But even still, if they judge fans by when they got into a group, and use that as a measure of whether or not they're a "true fan", that's just plain stupid. Especially considering all the logical reasons people might be late in becoming fans of a group. There's artists I like, for instance, that hit it big elsewhere in the world/parts of the country I live in years ago, but who took a while to get attention/gain much of a following where I live, if any. So yeah, I would be a latecomer fan as a result, because my area didn't hear about them right away or give them much in the way of airplay (if any), like other places did. Can't exactly control that.

I've just never understood the whole attitude of "only certain people can be fans of this thing". It's rare for me to find people who like the same music I do where I live, so I'm always happy when the stuff I like gets some sort of mainstream popularity. More fans to meet as a result :).
