Since people are inevitably going to be asking wtf the episode is about...:

Spongebob asks Squidward what his happiest memory is. Squidward admits he's never had one so Spongebob promises to give him a happiest memory. He takes Squidward to a concert, museum etc but something always goes wrong. Eventually Squidward gives up and locks himself in his house, falling into a deep depression. There are two gags about suicide (Squidward sticks his head in the oven to pull out some brownies, Squidward throws a rope over a beam to hang a scallop cage) and at one point Spongebob gets so worried about Squidward he even says "At least we know he's still alive."

Squidward is ignoring Spongebob completely at this point so Spongebob decides to kidnap him and bring him to the Krusty Krab. He reveals to Squidward hundreds of paper mache Spongebob cut-outs and says he wanted to throw Squidward a party. "And fill it with your favorite person: me!" Spongebob says.

Squidward has a complete mental breakdown and even outright screams that he doesn't want a happiest memory. He goes completely feral and starts destroying all the Spongebob paper maches, finally shouting that that is his happiest memory.

Meanwhile, Spongebob just watches him, smiling the whole time, and sighs "He's so handsome" happily to himself. End episode.

Wow Spongebob, wow.

Though now you've made me want to go watch this episode. (I'm curious if there's any dark and creepy, mostly one-sided Spongebob/Squidward fic around. I've never looked for Spongebob fic, but considering the internet...it has to exist.)

That is...wow.

Yeah. Just...wow.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-22 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, really? Is this true? Even that last line?

Holy crap, that's super dark for a Spongebob episode.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-22 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
What the actual fuck.

Frankly in terms of creepiness I thought "Squid's Visit" was way worse. I mean, Spongebob was pulling some Ted Bundy-level shit with the way he lured Squidward into his house. And I always thought it was some weird sexual allegory that Spongebob technically "succeeds" by getting Squidward in his bed (literally) in the end. But I tend to overthink things, so.

I'm just so fucked up at this point that this entire description was just fine to me.

Until that last line.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-23 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
...Yeah that's...impressive. And now I'm kinda curious, how would you guys have changed it?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-23 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
da

messed up squidbob shipper here likes it the way it is, but i really really felt terrible for squidward at the end. he didn't get a happy ending, it's clear he's clinically depressed, and when you start reading way wayyy into it, it sounds like the only person who cares for him is spongebob. imagine having no friends, and yet the only one who pays attention to you is a creepy-ass neighbor who makes your life miserable, stalks you non-stop because apparently he wants to fuck you, and never take no for an answer.

so going with what op said, when you factor in that wtf-worthy last line, spongebob comes across as not only selfish but extremely rape-y. for a happier ending i would've liked to have sponge and squid genuinely enjoy their little party.

this is awful and it really does sound that they're trying to make a call back to that shitty creepypasta (called "squidward's suicide") and just reading that - and knowing they got away with it - honestly offends the shit out of me.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-23 06:30 am (UTC)(link)
offends

Suicide jokes in cartoons are nothing new, though.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-23 07:04 am (UTC)(link)
same anon

usually they don't offend me but this did.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-23 07:57 am (UTC)(link)
ngl, if i shipped them that would make me really happy. i'd run straight to microsoft word with that material.

...i'm starting to ship them.

.... and both of them still stick around.

is it fun to be an audience than pedestrian?

Wow... That's ... What in the world did the writers think when they wrote that?

What about the "Icky and corpse-y" episode?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-23 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Spongebob can get really dark.

There was that episode where Spongebob thought he'd run someone over with his car and killed them - so to hide it he tried to bury the corpse!

Patrick quote as he puts the body in the trunk - "It's all icky and corpse-y."

Only the guy wasn't dead, so they'd tried to bury a live person! (well, fish)

I've not seen the suicide episode yet, so the car corpse one still ranks as the most eye-poppingly darkest for me.

isn't it spongebob and mr. krabs who try to bury the health inspector because they think they've killed him by feeding him a tainted krabby patty?

(that one's one of my favorites.)
