AO3 Etiquette: Bookmark Notes

(Anonymous) 2015-09-23 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I want to start keeping public bookmarks on AO3 so that, rather than keeping up with a recs list, I can just link people to my profile when they ask me for recs, but I'm unsure as to what kind of comments I'm expected to leave in my notes. Is it considered rude to write negative things in your bookmark notes? I'm not tearing fics apart or anything, but I would like to mention things that bothered me about a fic alongside the things that I liked about it, and I worry that, since bookmarks are so visible to the author, I'll be committing some faux pas by leaving critical comments.

Authors don't even know you've left your own notes, unless they go looking at who all's been bookmarking, so say what you want.

See, I'm inclined to think this way, but I also know many authors who like to look at who's been bookmarking their fics (to see if the bookmarker left any comments and to see what else they have bookmarked), so I'm torn.

I suppose. But I mean, that's kind of their problem if they go looking for how people are bookmarking. But then, I'm all about tagging whatever your posts are about on tumblr, too, regardless of whether its praise, crit or hate. (Note: This does not apply for tagging people, just works.)

I look, but I wouldn't really care if someone wrote negative marks. I figure they must have liked parts of it if they bookmarked, so that outweighs the fact that they may not have liked all of it.

Do it. I usually write my summary of thoughts or whatever on pinboard, but some of my AO3 bookmarks have them specifically because I know it's a bit more public. Someone on the site, or the author, could get a use out of them imo, and I like to think it counts as a rec and comment in one.
