Hmmm, what went wrong for you? I had a basic Cusinart ice cream maker and a few things that really helped me was:

1) Be sure to chill mixes overnight if you're using a cooked custard base.
2) Check the machine after 15-20 minutes. It should be the texture of slightly runny soft serve. Longer than 25 minutes is usually no good because the freezer canister gets too warm. Also if it runs too long you end up with bits of butter in the ice cream.
3) Ice cream needs to harden overnight for the best texture.

I have the Cuisnart one. I've never done a cooked custard base before, so that's definitely not the problem.

Do you mind sharing some of your successful recipes?
