I know it's buzzfeed, but it's still his words.
The money shots:
-“I kind of found out, in the testing process, that actually, for straight people, [Danny] is a very easy in. Danny’s very straight-acting. He gets mistreated because of that. [Straight audiences] can feel for him.”
-“They learned something from Danny — that you can make it, that you can study, you can maybe have a more regular life,” Emmerich said. “I also don’t have the feeling at the end that they are so much on the streets anymore.”
All right, so basically, he has a straight-acting lead who gets mistreated for being straight because otherwise straight people totally couldn't empathize, and also, this straight-acting lead is a white guy who teaches the POC all about not living on the streets.
Not touching the trans part because I've heard conflicting things from people about the trans presence at Stonewall, but just those two things alone are like "...what." And he doesn't get why people are upset with him.
OOOoooooooh my fucking god.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-23 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)And, I mean, Emmerich for all his passion was probably never going to be the director to execute a project like this successfully

Vanity Fair also earns an A plus: http://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2015/09/stonewall-review-roland-emmerich
P.S. 7% on Rotten Tomatoes. 7%! http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/stonewall_2015/

(Anonymous) 2015-09-24 02:00 am (UTC)(link)And rightly so. The whole situation does sound pretty shitty, which is a shame, 'cause I'd be all for seeing a really good story about Stonewall. And I'd love to hear the personal stories of some of the more notable people who were there.

I can't muster up anything more eloquent than that. Just... EW.

You know I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, but this is like... this is so bad. Respectability politics, classism/racism, just straight up ignoring history...
