Is this about that virtual novel about the girl and the bugs?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-24 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup.

Yeah.

Apparently, it's the greatest thing ever, because it applies logic to superhero powers and demonstrates how they would really work in the real world. That's the only fucking thing I've ever heard about it. Never heard anyone say shit about its plot or characters being well-drawn or its prose being good. Because the only thing you need to impress nerds these days is some interesting munchkining of superpowers or magic, and people will fall over themselves to praise your shit.

I only got through one section of it and then stopped. Watching her make such bad decisions was just not something I wanted to do. I liked what I read though.

I get the same feeling reading posts by Worm fans that I get reading posts by SCP Foundation fans. "They're the BAD GUYS! But they have to do it, because they're saving the world! Isn't this so cool and transgressive, writing about BAD GUYS saving the world by being BAD GUYS? Don't you wish you were a super cool BAD GUY? Butofcoursewedon'tcondonedoingbadthingsinreallifemumblemumblemumble. Anyway, BAD GUYS!"

On one hand, I find the actual web novel so grating that every time I try to read it I don't get very far. I'm like you too that I prefer the fanfics.

On the other hand, Memories of Iron and Firebird are not fics I think are well written either. Memories of Iron doesn't focus enough on characterization and character development for me. And while Firebird does focus on it, I don't think it does it well. Plus as crossovers they're handled badly.

A Cloudy Path is the Worm crossover I enjoy the most. And for character development I like Maharal the Theo-centric fic the best. I enjoy various one shots as well.
