I'm not a big fan of giving people the benefit of the doubt just because they're Christian.

This. Being religious shouldn't automatically be a "get out of jail free" card for any bad things you do. And "Christian" doesn't necessarily equal "good person", either. Look at the Duggar family for a notable recent example.

(There are plenty of Christians I and my family personally know who are legit good, decent people, don't get me wrong. Just that it's not an automatic guarantee.)

I don't know anything about this particular couple, though, so I can't comment on them.

I don't know where the OP is from, but in the U.S., a lot of people associate Christian with "good person". Even when prominent Christians act in really horrible ways, people still cut them a lot of slack. Sometimes to the point of rationalizing their bad behavior, much like the Duggars and their supporters have done.

Personally, I think that's a bad idea. It's a great way to nurture and protect hypocrites, though.
