(Anonymous) 2015-09-24 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)It's like all those politicians who go on and on about how gay marriage "destroys the moral fabric of our society"...while they themselves, who are supposedly "happily married" and in "traditional marriages", are off "hiking the Appalachian trail" with their mistress or meeting guys in airport bathrooms or paying for hookers or whatever. At that point, they really need to just shut up.
I don't condone adultery, but it's ultimately none of my business what other couples do-if someone cheats on their significant other that's for the couple and the person they cheated with to deal with.
However, if someone gets on a high moral horse about others' "sinful" behavior all while committing their own sins (most of which are often much worse than the stuff they're condemning)? They'd best be prepared to be scrutinized and called out for it if and when they get caught.
And when they are caught, just saying, "I prayed to God and all is forgiven!" doesn't wash with me. I like the idea of people being forgiven for sins, because I do think, with the exception of a few extremely horrific actions, most people can redeem themselves and get a second chance. And I'm not even speaking in a religious sense with that-I'm not really a religious person myself. I'm just speaking in a general "humans fuck up and do stupid things sometimes, it happens" sense.
But I also think a lot of these people's claims of being forgiven and redeemed sound very superficial and hollow. Their actions after a scandal/fall from grace will tell me a lot more about whether or not they can be forgiven and redeemed, be it by their God or society at large or their family or whatever, than whatever teary platitudes they spout at some press conference will.
