Trying some Batman isn't as hard as you think, if you want to take a whack at him. There *can* be some wrinkles, though because DC has a nasty habit of tying together all the bat family titles without making it clear in the trades what's going on - I have problems reccing Batgirl to people over this, because around the third New 52 trade it gets weird.
(don't worry about what 'new 52' means yet)
A lot of arcs, all you need to know is the general gist. Batman: Year One, or The Long Halloween are both really good classics and don't need any other setups, really. Long Halloween in particular has a bit of both noir and horror to it, with really stylized art.
You might try a trade of Hellboy, but considering what you've said, you might actually give Locke & Key a shot. It's dark fantasy with some horrific elements, and it's as much about the characters as the weirdness going on. Not super-gory, and it's written by a guy with good literary horror chops (Joe Hill). Just follow the trade numbers and you're good.
More and more libraries carry trades now, btw, and that makes for an easy and cheap way to test some stuff out.
