Yep. That quote is the age old excuse for why Christians don't have to feel bad about other people thinking they're assholes. It's at the root of the persecution complex Christians in the U.S. have about their religion.

In my opinion, just about any strongly ideological movement/faith/government has to put forth that they're persecuted in order to have the righteous moral high ground. Most people don't want to feel evil when other people criticise them or are hurt by their actions.

Some groups are in fact wholly persecuted. Others, usually far more powerful, just claim that they are, or use their fallen as evidence that they're under siege. Racists of all stripes, homophobes (DOMA!), MRAs, etc are analogous to Christians here in the West.
