Being a poet is in itself a high risk for suicide!

Is that a true fact?

If so, I have to wonder if being a poet actually puts one at risk of suicide, or (more likely) if there are other factors that contribute to both.

they call it the sylvia plath effect

just google "poets who committed suicide' for a long, long list--and that probably doesn't even count guys like delmore schwartz, who arguably drank himself to death

Being a writer of any kind raises your suicide risk by 4%. Being a poet raises it by 20%. I suspect "factors that contribute to both" is the most likely.

I feel it's more that people who suffer from abuse, addiction, mental illness, etc. tend to express themselves creatively in order to sort out their feelings/frustrations with the world.
