Books for an 8-year-old girl

(Anonymous) 2015-09-25 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm doing a book club with my niece and I need some books that are age-appropriate for her but preferably something I can enjoy too. She likes Boxcar kids right now and she's been read Alice in Wonderland but that's a little advanced for her.

Any thoughts?

I'm not entirely sure what age range you're looking for, but when I was young, I read a little bit of Boxcar, and quite a bit of Babysitter's Club, Encyclopedia Brown and Hardy Boys (though that might be a little old for her?). I also read a lot of Gordon Korman, Judy Blume's Fudge series and the Bingo Brown books.

Try the Kiki Strike series. Those are fun.

There's also 'The Skin I'm In' and the 'Crossover' both of which are excellently written. Some of the material is a bit heart-wrenching though.

Seconding Kiki Strike! Those are wonderful books.

The Phantom Tollbooth is kind of Alice in Wonderland-ish. The first Harry Potter book might be fun, too. I enjoyed the Charlie Bone books around that age - some mystery, adventure and fantasy - although I never did finish the series, so I'm not sure if it's worth starting.

Harriet the Spy! The Enchanted Forest Chronicles! Perhaps The Black Stallion or Misty of Chincoteague? So many great books! :)

I was crazy about Elizabeth Enright's Melendy books (The Saturdays and The Four-Story Mistake) and Gone-Away Lake. Also No Flying in the House, and Marian Cockrill's Shadow Castle. If she likes horses, maybe Misty of Chincoteague? Also, I loved Rumer Godden's The Dolls' House.

Ursula Vernon's 'Dragonbreath' series and her new book 'Harriet the Invincible'; they're half-way between picture books and chapter books, with fun illustrations, cute stories, and sneakily-integrated educational facts. They're not terribly dense as far as words-per-page goes, but the vocabulary isn't dumbed-down.

Also, not enough people have read AA Milne's original Winnie-the-Pooh books; the prose is super charming and off-beat, and the characters are of course famously lovable.

sa

also, Andrew Clement's school stories, starting with Frindle, are all terrific. I especially like 'No Talking'. :D

I know these are older books, but I loved Nancy Drew growing up.

I don't know what the newer ones are like, but the American Girl Doll books from the late 90s (Molly, Kirsten, Felicity, Samantha, Addy) were really good and not just gross corporate tie-ins. They're well-researched and have good Learning Lessons but aren't too sacchrine. Again, can't speak to the ones for the newer dolls, but I loved the original ones when I was at that age.

The Josefina, Caroline, Kaya, and Maryellen characters have pretty good stories. Some of the AG books can be a little upsetting because of the subject matter though (death, child labor, racism, slavery, ect.) I don't recommend the Julie, Cecile, and Marie-Grace books as they're not as well-researched as the other ones. The characters are now branded as BeForever, but I highly recommend looking for the original six volume editions because those have longer "Looking Back" sections with nice photographs and more historical information.
