6 inches sounds roughly about right. They grow pretty fast though, and I (and many) appreciated gifts given at birth more for baby when they got to 3 or even 6 months, because by that stage I was ready to leave the house with baby in finery, and I was sufficiently recovered to give more of a shit about more than whether baby was covered in shit. Plus baby grows a bit slower so more use is gotten out of that stuff.

Also consider the season. If it's a short sleeve and it will be winter, it won't get seen half the time.

But a lovely thing to do!

Also, my 6 month old is apparently bang on average for the primarily euro population percentiles, so if you need average measurements for an older baby I can measure mine.

That would be great. What I'm seeing online has 6" for neck to hip, but how much of that is arm? I've got ideas to make it expandable, but I don't want to make it too big either, really. My main problem is that the last time I held an actual newborn was almost a decade ago. I have *no idea* how big a baby really is anymore. I know there's differences child to child, but I don't even have a starting point for this. I'm thinking *probably* about 4", and it's a crochet tutu, so the skirt will cover some if it's short, but I just figured that it was worth asking since she mentioned just having one.

Also, on your seasons thing: It's going to be a batman theme ballerina, and the gloves will join the jacket/cape, and the boots will be part of the diaper cover, so hopefully something the kid can't wiggle out of too easily (because babies are nudists. I'm sure of it). I have plans. Which may be very fluid, but they are plans, at least.

Oh my god cuuuuuuute. That's adorable. Many commendations on your project nonny.

So I measured my averagey average 6mo old (spreadsheet anon, I hope you're getting all this down), and here they are approx:

linear.......
hip to "floor": 11.5"
shoulder to hip: 8.5"
wrist to fingertip: 3"
foot length: 4.25"
neck to diaper following front curve to centre of crotch: 14"-ish

circumferences........
chest: 18"
hip: 17"
belly: 18.25"
thigh at top: 10.25"
bicep: 6"
armscye: 9"
wrist: 4.25"
ankle: 5"
head horizontally above ears: 17"
head, over top shoulder to shoulder: approx 16"

I hope that helps you visualise the size of a slightly older baby. Eyeball some pics on the net to get an idea of where babies tend to be the fattest, they're weird shaped. Proportionately a newborn is similar, just smaller. Things that are a bit loose are fine, parents are used to it. If you need any more measurements, let me know!

That's awesome, thanks! Yeah, even if it's a bit big, they'll grow. I just needed a starting point for the ones I couldn't find, so this is a big help. It's a very cuddly yarn, but none of that will make it more comfortable for her if the armpits pinch or something.
