It's a very interesting topic. In Return of the Jedi, Luke asks Leia what she remembers of her real mother and she says she can remember a little. Then when the last prequel came out, I thought "She can't possibly be forming memories of Padme here, unless this is a Force thing." So, I wonder if she did indeed have an impression of Padme being beautiful and sad back from when Leia was a newborn (Luke says he has no memories of his mother) or if she thought Bail's wife that we see at the end of the movie was her real mother and that woman had died when Leia was young and Leia had a step mother later and so she thought that's what Luke was talking about (it's a bit later in the conversation that Luke brings up the fact they are siblings.)

I totally read any fics about the stuff mentioned in the secret, too. And my personal headcanon has always been that following Anakin going nuts, Padme and Leia were smuggled to Alderaan and for two or three years, Padme served as basically a nanny and nursemaid to her own child, with only Bail Organa, his wife, and maybe a few others in the palace knowing the full truth. Eventually Padme succumb to illness after a few years (because it's got to really suck spending years with a broken heart) and she was quietly buried. Though Bail Organa and his wife do eventually tell a fragment of the truth to Leia when she's older, the nursemaid part, not the "Your father is Darth Vader" part, though.

That's my headcanon and I stand by it, no matter what retcons are thrown my way.

I love your headcanon.

Apparently, George Lucas originally intended to survive and hide out as a handmaiden to Organa's wife but changed his mind while writing the prequels.
