TBH, the old Muppet show had its dicey moments too. I remember there was a Halloween show with Alice Cooper as the guest star. He went around between acts trying to get Muppets to sell their soul to the devil. Piggy agreed, but got a refund when she noticed it would permanently alter her appearance to look like a metal-beaked bird.

FYI, the Muppet Show has adults as its intended audience, and Sesame Street is aimed at young children. It's very hard for casual viewers to understand this, especially since Kermit the Frog is in both of them. Kermit after hours on late night TV talks about radically different stuff than he would on Sesame Street, where they have child psychologists screen the scripts if difficult subject matter is being discussed.

Thank you. This seems to have gone way over most commenter's heads here. (And I loved that Alice Cooper episode.)

Mahna!

There was a show where Piggy ripped a towel off Nureyev, leaving him naked (to her POV, not to the audience).

Rachel Welsh danced seductively in a dress made of straps with a giant spider and flirted with Fozzy.

There was The "I am my own grandpa" and the "Welcome to our house" songs. The first one was about incest, the second about serial killing. In a cheerful tone.

Your mentioned Alice Cooper show.

The "I've got you under my skin" number

Two words> "tit willow"

Yeah, I have no idea why people think The Muppet Show was for children.

The Nureyev episode is especially funny when you know there were circulating nude pictures of him (yes, even before the Internet, lo and behold) and he was known to be well equipped in areas of interest (to Piggy).

Right? I'm raising an eyebrow over the implication that The Muppet Show was a kid show. It was intended for families, with stuff that appeals to both kids AND adults. I mean seriously, look at the guest stars. How many children knew or cared who the fuck Peter Sellers was?
