(Anonymous) 2015-09-26 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)Instead, these guys honestly come off more like three rich friends who hired three high end prostitutes for the weekend, have already had a bunch of sex with them, and now everybody's just fucking around, including the girls. Nothing about that scenario bothers me.
Along with some of his more problematic quotes about Blurred Lines, Thicke also says, "we just wanted to turn it over on its head and make people go, 'Women and their bodies are beautiful. Men are always gonna want to follow them around.'" I think that intention genuinely comes through in the video - at least it does for me. In that regard, what OP says about the video "glorifying the power of female sexuality" is actually accurate.
That said, I disagree with OP about the video not objectifying women. It absolutely does. The women don't sing or speak while the men do. The women are naked while the men are clothed. The men look mostly at the camera, in a way that suggests they're conspiring with the viewer, while the women look at the camera far less often and when they do they look at it seductively. I don't think the video degrades women, but it definitely objectifies them.
I also disagree that the critics of the video are misogynists. I'd say there's good reason to be critical of it. But I do question how absolutely most critics condemn it. It often seems that critics of the video simple see gorgeous tits and asses and men evidently appreciating those tits and asses, and to them it instantly equals "degrading to women," which, ugh, nope. Nudity is not degrading to women. Consensual sexualized nudity is also not degrading to women.
They look comfortable naked, for one thing. They don't look desperate for attention, or desperate to be fucked, or desperate in any way really. They look playful and flirtatious, and like they're having a bit of fun. I think the worst thing that can be said about their state is that they all look rather detached, like nothing that's going on matters much. I guess that's probably where my "high end prostitutes" scenario comes from. But again, nothing about that scenario bothers me.
Overall, for me Blurred Lines is a video which is definitely problematic in its depiction of women, but far more mildly and less absolutely so than most people make it out to be.
