12 OP

(Anonymous) 2008-02-10 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
He did before he was a serial killer. People, watches, same diff.

I think there is a huge difference between repairing watches and "fixing" people, if by that you mean offering psychological advice... O_o

But I really don't know Gabriel Gray fanon, because to me it has zip to o with that character on the show, so I wouldn't know. Maybe the fangirls believe he was an outgoing, gentle humanitarian who helped his fellow people achieve their happiness, or some stupid sappy nonsense like this.

What is with this onslaught of "Hi, I fail at interpreting Sylar" secrets lately?

Re: 12 OP

It was a poorly phrased sexual euphemism, and trust me, it was in no way intended to be sappy. Leave it.

On the other hand, saying Gabriel Gray has zip to do with Sylar is a little like saying Eddie Brock has zip to do with Venom. You can't truly understand the person someone becomes without first understanding who he was before the transition and how that transition came about.

I was not saying Gabriel Gray had zip to do with Sylar. I was saying Gabriel Gray fanon had zip to do with Sylar.

(And I was sort of using the names Gabriel and Sylar interchangeably, sorry if that caused any confusion. For me, they are the same guy, just different phases in his life, so sometimes I use them a bit freely.)

"Fanon" being the term used in opposition to "canon". Fanon as in "the fangirls or fanboys pretend that the character is like this, even though this interpretation is not validated by the actual show".

Re: 12 OP

Aha. In that case, yeah, I retract my snark with apologies. Gabriel and Sylar are indeed phases of the same individual, and although the distinction in nomenclature is convenient for indicating which phase you're talking about, they're still essentially the same person shaped by different circumstances. Fan speculation without canon basis is sometimes necessary for fic, but it certainly doesn't lend weight to anyone's interpretation of the character.

Speculations are fine and dandy as long as they acknowledge that they are just speculations.

I think I sometimes use "Sylar" to mean him no matter what phase or age... but it's true that referring to the guy in, say, Five Years Gone as "Gabriel" would be kind of weird. (Unless I want to make fun of him, I suppose.)

Then again, he used the term as an alias or persona in season 2, and I sometimes use "Zane" to mean Sylar's persona in episodes 1x15-1x18... so this is more complicated than I first thought. D:
Damn you, Sylar.

Re: 12 OP

1. Yes. And when I speculate, I do so acknowledge.

2. I tend to use "Gabriel" for the 6MA version, "Sylar" for everything after he starts killing people, and "Zanelar" for his persona on the road trip with Mo. Oh, and "Sy-I-mean-Gabriel" for the S2 version between introducing himself to the Herrera twins and shooting up blood in an alley, when I'm feeling particularly facetious.

...ah, the simple things in life. My "Please confirm you are a human below" character sequence for this comment, verbatim: zqk68s2. I am amused.

1. I wish everyone did that. Instead we get people who attack the show for daring to prove them wrong.

2. In season 2, that's still Sylar to me, the guy on the road trip... At the very least, I would refer to him as such from the moment on where he gets in contact with Mohinder.
(I like that Mohinder strictly refers to him as Sylar! :D When Maya calls him "Gabriel", he is like "You mean Sylar, don't you?" And that really IS Sylar in Powerless, he is not trying to come across as anyone else...)
It's kind of tricky what to call him when the road trip comes to a close. He does an increasingly bad job at keeping up the "Gabriel, best friend of Dr. Suresh" pretence. He keeps slipping into full-on Sylar mode so often, it makes me wonder if... if he was even trying at all.

Re: 12 OP

(Anonymous) 2008-02-10 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
1. Yeah, that's nuts. No argument here.

2. Hence the strikethrough text-- he's calling himself Gabriel, but if you look under the scribbled crossing-out, he's still a ruthless, manipulative asshole whose goal in life is to climb as high as he can on piles of superpowered corpses. Thus: "Sylar-- no, wait, I mean Gabriel, really. Just like the angel." Yes, I suppose you're right that you could draw the line where he gives up the pretence as coming right around the time he comes face to face with Mohinder, although since I didn't see that scene myself I'm fuzzy on the details. (I missed the first ten minutes of every S2 episode because of a scheduling conflict. Pity me.)

You do realize there's a difference between watches and people, and watchmakers and, uh, physicians or psychologists?

For God's sake, does no one on this community have a dirty mind? FIX = FUCK.
