Maybe you're getting that because that was a big concern during the era. Money's usually brought up because that was what determined who you did marry.

Lizzy Bennet turned down Mr.Darcy the first time he asked. He was rich, but he was still an asshole. He wasn't any richer when he stopped being a jerk and she realized it.

Yet some people still seem to think the ideals presented in the book is awesome.

I wasn't agreeing with you. I was saying that her heroine's usually didn't care about money above everything else. Because Austen makes the case that money and security makes for a hollow happiness when you aren't with someone you can love and respect.

that's kinda awesome, right?

Yes, that's cool and all...

But I mean, in modern society, everyone I have met that likes the book likes it because of the ideals presented... and of course, my english teacher in 11th grade aws all AUSTIN WRITES AWESOME ROMANCE, DID U KNOW. IT'S TOTALLY AN AWESOME BOOK BECAUSE OF ALL THE TRU LUV AND RICH MENS... and tried to failed me when I presented the opposite. it was hilarious.

The romances are good. But the books aren't 100% loooove. Your teacher sounds a little shallow. But just because a lot of people now like the ideals shouldn't count against the books.

aaaah I hate it when teachers do that! That sucks. And I'd probably have some resentment about Austen too if I'd had an experience like that.

Oh god she was. *I wanted to punch her in the face so bad* but then I had another one who did the mountain and the valley, which was AMAZINg and yeah...

I still think they were poorly written, personally. I mean you're free to disagree and all :D but thats just the way I feel about em.

Eh, if i should have resentment towards austen for that I should have resentment towards pythagorias for the one math teacher that kept telling me I didnt do my assignments so he could fail me. (of course he later 'found' them miraculously)

Re: 51

[identity profile] slylilgoblin.livejournal.com 2008-02-10 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
I've never heard of that. What is it?

alright. I can't change your opinion about the writing. I just get annoyed when people get superior about them because they think it's all about ~*~true looove!~*~ when there's more to them than that.

ha ha. Yeah, blame the teacher there definitely. Though I'm pretty sure pythagoras has been dead for long enough that you can say whatever you want about him. XD So maybe it'd be easier to be resentful towards him.

You've had some seriously sucky teachers. Poor you.

The Mountain and The Valley is basically about this kid... he's a genious. He's really smart, and clever... and yet he has to live his whole life in this small town that is full of very simple people. He has to work at his family's farm while his siblings go off and get married or join the army... meanwhile the entire time he talks about climbing this mountain by their villiage, which is basically a giant metaphor for his want to live up to his full potential... and ... well, I won't spoil it for you if you don't want.

Yeah... I know there's more to it, but people usually don't talk about moret han the TRUUUUUEEELOOOOVE4EVER DARCY+LIZZIEBETH bullshit...

AHAHHA I CAN SAY HORRIBLE THINGS ABOUT YOU, PYTHORAGAS. TAKE THAT.

And yeah... I have... but I had a couple awesome ones that really made up for it ... unfortunately too little too late D:

Huh. Sounds pretty interesting. Most school books are so bad, it's really nice to read one that actually doesn't suck!

I love Darcy and lizzy as much as the next Austen fangirl, but it pisses me off when people write all her books off as glorified romance novels. People with uninformed superiority complexes really drive me nuts.

hahahaha pythagoras! Serves you right for getting involved in all that geometry crap.

Its... yeah. It's really amazing. Alot of people find it boring but it's amazing~

XD yeah.... its... yeah pretty stupid of them.

Damned GEOMETRY!!!!!
