No, listen, I don't want to be a pedant here, but there's just no imaginable universe where Flogging Molly could be described as an "Irish folk band"

(Anonymous) 2015-09-26 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Flogging Molly is Irish inspired rock.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-26 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
nahh I was gonna say the same really

folk-infused Irish punk, perhaps?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-26 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
It's punk rock. It's definitely drawing a ton from Irish folk music but it is not Irish folk.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-26 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
(that's why I said folk-infused :P)

This. I mean, they're a punk band from the United States for Christ's sake.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-26 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Lead singer is Irish (as in born and brought up there)

(Anonymous) 2015-09-26 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Right? That's what I came here to comment on too.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-26 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
My pandora station calls it Celtic punk.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-26 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
How are they not a folk band? Is it the electrics? (Legitimately confused folk fan)

This was almost a quality troll (I mean, Flogging Molly is Irish folk? Have you ever heard of a genre called punk? It was really popular for the six weeks after the Sex Pistols went on TV) but it only would have worked if Anti-Irish Anon hadn't been shitposting all year.

Came here to say this :)

Heh ♥ this is a sneak troll, right? I'll leave this here anyway if it was an honest mixup:

>folk

OP

I think my boss called it folk. He had Pandora set playing a station of it for several hours. I couldn't actually tell the singers apart, but he called one of the bands Flogging Molly, and I looked up the lyrics from another song and discovered the band was called Great Big Sea. To me, it all sounded like pounding variations on Drunken Sailor.

I see! Whatever got you into it, and whatever anyone thought it was called it doesn't matter that much once you end up looking for related bands anyway :D

And also hell yes Great Big Sea!

Yeah, that's definitely more folk rock than folk

VERY big distinction in a lot of ways

I found an awesome song by Great Big Sea about them finding only the top half of mermaids hot lol.

Drunken Sailor actually plays on my Pandora station for that music, none of the music sounds like variations of that song, they all sound more like punk Irish folk music, which I happen to like because I like punk and bagpipes and it's actually great music to color to.

I'm might be a freak though, because whenever some one points out that all music from a genre sounds the same, I'm like no? Even for genres I hate.

except Irish music wouldn't have bagpipes.

It would have Uilleann pipes, which sound very similar and a layperson probably can't tell the difference if they're buried in a punk mix.

banjos give me migraines.

bad part of this is I grew up on bluegrass and my dad plays the banjo... sorry daddy

(bluegrass in general tends to give me a headache, probably too many emotional connections or something)

I hate Flogging Molly AND Dropkick Murphys.
