Your fannish mistakes or embarrassments

[personal profile] skeletal_history 2015-09-26 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
So, you consider yourself a fan of [whatever], however you define fan, but let's assume it involves being really familiar with [whatever's source material]. Tell me about a moment when you've realized you've gotten something obviously wrong about the source material THIS WHOLE TIME and never knew it, and now you feel dumb.

I'll reply with my example (actually made a secret about it years ago), and would love to hear your own!

I somehow applied Dumbledore's taste in music to James Bond.

Well I was asking my brother who's the biggest fan of the JB movies I know about the character's personal tastes. I lurked the Skyfall fandom and wanted to know the character better. I did watch all the movies when I was a kid but didn't remember much to be honest. I was trying to remember all I know about James Bond, and somehow this idea ("James Bond likes chamber music" popped up). I asked my brother if it was true and he said he had never heard about this. Still, I was really convinced of this for a while. I think someone on AO3 or Tumblr asked about what kind of music James Bond liked and I answered that he liked chamber music.

Months later I learned it was actually Dumbledore. James Bond doesn't like any genre of music, except jazz. I was mortified, because I was convinced everyone on the Internet knew I had confused Dumbledore with James Bond.

Oh my god, don't be embarrassed about that mix-up. That's amazing.

I consider myself a lifelong fan of Depeche Mode. I'm 37, I bought their album Violator (on cassette!) when I was 12 and that was it for me -- saved up the money to buy all their earlier albums, listened to them obsessively, as the years went on continued getting their new albums on release, still listen to them regularly, etc. etc.

But it took me YEARS to realize that Martin Gore didn't just write the songs and sing backup -- he sang LEAD, too, on a lot of songs. A lot of songs that I consider my favorite Depeche Mode songs, that I had heard 38502 times by that point. I just hadn't been able to distinguish between his voice and Dave Gahan's. And.....I still have trouble with that to this day.

Gah.

Ha, Martin is easier for me to sing along to because his range is closer to mine (although I sing an octave higher).

I know I discussed this on FS with someone before where I linked to a wiki article that lists songs with Martin on lead and it may have been you I talked to.

I'm a big fan of Old Hollywood movies. I'm only 22, but I grew up in a family that thrives off of TCM and Robert Osbourn. One of my favorite movies is Some Like it Hot, starring Marylin Monroe, Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis, and Joe E. Brown. And up until very recently, I thought Joe E Brown's character was named "Osgood Feeling," but his name is actually "Osgood Fielding"!!! It took me seeing the movie for a fifth or sixth time plus seeing gifs spelling it out for it to finally sink in!

I still sometimes get names from Murder Rooms: The Dark Beginnings of Sherlock Holmes wrong. But what can I do when 1) the only moment when all the names are actually spelt out is the final credits; and, more importantly, 2) there's a novelization where half of the names are deliberately changed or misspelt? :D

Okay so many years ago there was a popular webcomic. I must have been like....12 or 13. I had no concept of commissions or anything. I emailed the author to ask them to draw a Happy Birthday picture for my friend who really liked the webcomic.

I got it too.

But looking back on it, holy shit me. *embarrassment* I can only assume they recognise I was some dumb-young kid and humoured me with what was a pretty awesome 30 minute sketch.

and now whenever I see the artists in the same circles I slink under a rock and hide because in some places I've still got the same username and I don't want her to remember me.

Aww, it was a sweet gesture on both your ends. If the artist were really bothered or annoyed, I think it'd be much more likely for them to either ignore your request or say "no" upfront. If it's really popular, the odds they'll remember your username out of their email volume are probably also low.

On thinking back, I think I used my highschool email to do this and can't recall if I ever linked that email to the username on the forums.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-26 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
That's really sweet of you and of the webcomic author both.

I think this story is sweet :). I can see why you'd feel a little awkward about it, but that's still really cool of them to honor your request all the same.

Yeah I've still got it floating around somewhere, since it was digital but I just am so embarrassed in retrospect.
