I can't speak for anyone else, but preachiness alone may not be the defining factor.

Pretty much the entire internet seemed to hate The Newsroom, but I liked it a lot (at least the first two seasons; I haven't seen the third). Everyone said it was preachy and self-righteous, but I think the issues it addressed were extremely important and, for the most part, I thought it addressed them well. So I was totally into it. I can think of a few more things like that too. Stranger in A Strange Land was preachy af, but I'm an atheist so I was totally down for about 3/4 of Heinlein's preaching.
