If you haven't seen Avatar the Last Airbender, Zuko's storyline is similar to this. He starts off as a deeply angry and unhappy antagonist, but is eventually redeemed and while he doesn't become a happy-go-lucky person exactly, he gains friends, breaks away from an abusive family, and is definitely happier than he was previously

Oops, zuko isn't technically the main character buuuuut he does get a lot of screen time and character development. He's pretty much the deuteragonist of the story

Oh, that's a really good point, I didn't even think of how well Zuko fits exactly what I was thinking of. Sounds like a good time for an Avatar rewatch!
