Just to be clear: the point that you're making is that the option to show 'Other Tags' instead of all tags doesn't work for you, and that you specifically want the ability to block out non-common tags, yes?

If so, I agree. Although really what I want to do is just straight up filter any fic that has more than like... 20 tags.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-27 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm not particularly bothered by authors commenting in the tags, but an option to filter out fics that have an excessive number of any kind of tag would be extremely useful to me. I don't know how difficult that might be to implement, though.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-27 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
If they bring this in, I'd spend 10x more time on the site. The excessive tagging is a major turnoff.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-27 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
No, you should just ban comment tags, end of the story.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-27 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Disagree

I can get not wanting to see them, but I don't understand why they make people SO ANGRY that they want to nuke them off the face of the Internet

(Anonymous) 2015-09-27 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Because tags are for tagging things. If you want to write about random things, do it on your blog or add it at the end of your fic.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-27 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't see any reason tags can't be used as a communicative medium.

Again, I think if it bothers you there should be a way to not see them. And there's definitely a tension between those different uses. I just don't get why it pisses people off so much. Just, you know, take it easy, whatever.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-27 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Again, tags are a tool. When you misuse them, you're making it more difficult for people who want to read actual tags and know what the fic is about.

If you want to use comment tags in your blog, go ahead, but A03 isn't your personal space, is an archive.

I don't see any reason tags can't be used as a communicative medium.

Tags aren't for communicating. That's what author's notes and summaries are for. Tags are for sorting, cataloging and filtering. To treat them as a forum for communication not only defeats the purpose, but it makes it really hard to get their intended use out of them, and then you don't have anything you can use for sorting, cataloging or filtering, and that sucks.

Because sometimes people write an obscene amount of tags, which sucks when scrolling on mobile.

Also, it can make it hard to search for fics. Oh, you want a fic about Steve Rogers and cats? So you search for Steve Rogers and cats. But like 5 of those fics is just someone tagging, "#oh man #this fic was so hard to write #my cat is all over the keyboard #lol".

(Anonymous) 2015-09-27 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure. There are real issues here. And like I said, there should be a way to not display them.

I also think people get way disproportionately mad about it tho. In what seems like a really NO FUN ALLOWED way. Like, way out of proportion to the moderate hassle they can cause.

Depending on the fandom or tag you are searching, it can be really fucking annoying. And no one wants their free time to be wasted because authors want to write all their feels out in tags that are unrelated to the story.

Also, it is just bad for organization.

When it gets to the point where the tag isn't even relevant to the content of the fic at all, then yeah, that seems a bit silly (still doesn't annoy me personally, but I can see how it would annoy others). OTOH, if the tag does pertain to the fic, but is just a bit less formally structured, I'm totally for it. Some of my favorite tags to date have been:

"when people say consent is sexy they are not kidding believe me"
"it's not a date" "oh but it definitely is"
"the giant angsty porn fic of angst and porn"
"do not put the Thames in your mouth"

Variety in tagging just makes for a richer reading experience in my opinion. But I do support OP's desire for the option to opt out if one so chooses.

I barely even read tags anymore (besides the pairing and characters). They can be helpful for avoiding certain things, but they often don't tell you much of importance.

So yea, I wouldn't mind having them be collapsible, but I skip over them often enough that I'm used to it.

Me, too. I mostly only look to see if a fic is in a 'verse I want to read (i hate the 616 'verse, for instance) or if there's rape (not a fan of rape/torture porn stuff, so that's something i want to avoid).

Otherwise, if the tags are a huge blob of freeform whatever? I ignore.

If I read this right I believe I agree. I don't mind authors wanting to have them, however, I find paragraphs of tags to be very irritating when I'm trying to scroll through and find something to read. Those being collapsible would be a nice compromise.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-27 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
But the tumblr-style tags is a failsafe warning for badic. Think about all the crap you can avoid without losing a minute of sleep over it!

(Anonymous) 2015-09-27 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)
*badFIC dammit. Bad-dick is something else.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-27 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
No worries. So often they're both :-)

(Anonymous) 2015-09-27 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
But the tumblr-style tags is a failsafe warning for badfic.

This is true. And that is their sole redeeming (and entirely unintentional on the author's part) purpose.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-27 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
But you can already do this. I've had "Other Tags" blocked for years now.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-28 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
True, but OP said Other Tags are useful "sometimes".

(Anonymous) 2015-09-28 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
Anon, I'm not sure if you've got additional tags hidden or not - or if you just don't want want fics with a fuckton of additional tags to appear in your searches at all.

Just in case: to hide the additional tags, log in to your A03 account and go to "My Preferences". There's a ticky box to hide additional tags. I implemented this as soon as I found out about it and it's saved me a world of annoyance and eyestrain. You can still show them on a fic-by-fic basis.

I agree totally that wall-o'-tags is an indicator of badfic. I suppose it's useful in itself for that purpose.
