I agree. That's not to say I think it's okay, I think it's awful, but in comparison to some of the other initiation rituals out there? Some people get crazy on even a little power, and they use that power to humiliate people under them. Because they think it's funny. Which is really the terrible part.

And anyone who says, "Oh, it's tradition. It fosters brotherly/sisterly/team bonds!" Is the worst. Tradition changes, and all the traditions around humiliating people for membership in something need to change. Pronto.

The context is even worse than you're implying. The initiation ritual was to join a club who was for rich people who knew that they would one day be in a position of power. The purpose of the initiation ritual was to create bond of secrecy between future leaders of industry, politics, etc. I.e. the members would always have something to hold over people in extreme power - the heads of banks, the Prime Minister.

It's fucked up.

That is the problem. It's interesting that it's being exploited in this way, now.

He's a done deal. He's already said he doesn't intend to stay out his last term as PM. Chances are someone wants him out and George Osbourne (or someone equally as vile) in power asap.

Which is interesting because George Osbourne... does not seem especially gifted as an electoral politician, let's say.
