I'm researching the etymology here and I can't find anything concrete. I've been told it's the same as "faggot" and given it's background this seems to be the case but I would like to be sure.

No one seems to know the 100% concrete source. But I've mostly heard that it is slang for prisoners who are passed around for sex/raped.

It's not homophobic. It's not the same as faggot.

It's African American slang for calling someone a no good man. It has nothing to do with being gay or being trans, nor does it have anything to with rape.

It's a dumb slang word that has a bunch of meanings,that people argue over like it's serious fucking business and throw hissy fits at the idea that it can mean anything other than their "right" meaning.

Because it's not like words ever have multiple meanings. Nope, this is not a thing that can happen at all.
