Inspired by the recent secrets about Steven Universe's style. What are your favorites and least favorites?

I really like the style of the Persona series. Actually, I love the art of the Megami Tensei series in general.

Another one I love is Arakawa Hiromu's style. It's simple and cute.

My least favorites are things like Clamp, really most shoujo styles. I also dislike Empowered.

People actually pay commissions for that!

Because OMG some people actually LIKE the styles you don't. Shocker I know.

But that is hideous. Do you like that kind of uncanny valley style art?

I'm sure your favorite style is hideous and unnerving to someone out there.

Are you the artist of that? Or is that how your art looks? You seem awfully angry about this art style personally.

No I'm not, nor do I particularly care that much about it.

I just find your "how can people commission that" because you don't like it to be childish.

Disagreeing with your judgement on something doesn't always automatically mean someone's defensive because they like it or draw it. Grow up and get over yourself.

And really, I'd have the same reaction towards people paying for other kinds of terrible artwork like that. Or paying millions of dollars for a line on a white canvas.

Huh. OK, something about the use of light is odd. I don't like it so much myself, but I don't hate it like you do. I've seen a lot of stuff in that style, and maybe never put my finger on what's wrong with it. There does seem to be a shading fail.

I don't think I'm all that picky, but I do lean toward artists with a very slick, stylized touch--or else I go all the way to the other extreme and want rustic and minimalist.

What's the deal with people and SU? Is it just because it's popular? I don't even think it looks particularly great but folks are acting like they'd never seen an 'ugly' show on Cartoon Network before, and that's just absurd.

But which SMT art though? There are two artists. I will agree with you about loving Kaneko's art and designs.

Soejima has taken over the Persona art since P3, and I don't really enjoy the designs as much.

Favourites: Jack Kirby, Walt Simonson, Kaori Yuki

Least favourites: Jim Lee and his many, many imitators. Also seconding you on Empowered, holy shit that art is hideous.

I lean towards anime art, but I like a lot of cartoony stuff. Stuff that's full of caricature, but has a real life foundation too. Capcom's artists are generally good, especially kinu nishimura. I also like soft feeling, rounded things. Cute, but not obvious pandering. Various children book's have an appealing style too.

Not too keen on what's popular with american cartoons though. Steven universe and adventure time's ilk are repulsive to me.

I like things that use unconventional colors, but isn't pastels or super loud.

+1 to Arakawa Hiromu! I find her style so unique and interesting to look at.

Hmm, it varies a bit but I'll give a few (mostly recent) examples I like a lot: Hawkeye, Rat Queens, The Wicked + The Divine, Saga, Kazuya Minekura's stuff, (not anime or comics, but whatever) and Jet Grind Radio/Jet Set Radio. Oh, and Tiger and Bunny and Cowboy Bebop.

Least favorite...uh, that guy from DC. Someone help me out here. (I think he might've worked on The Authority for a bit, a comic which I love but had some rough, rough periods as far as art goes.)

Do you mean Frank Quitely of The Authority and All-Star Superman? Also known as, "The one who makes the men really big and the women really tiny with squinty catlike faces?"

Bryan Hitch and Arthur Adams also worked on The Authority. Glenn Fabry might have? I don't know who else off the top of my head.

I don't think Frank Quietly was the DC one I originally thought of, but I could be wrong! Either way, yes, I HAAAATED his art in The Authority. Apollo in particular was just... Awful. Ugh.

Some of Hitch's stuff was nice, some not so nice, and I wasn't a big fan of Adams but Quietly was so much worse. SO MUCH.

I thought Hitch's Apollo was so pretty. Quitely's was not.

For the most part he really, really was! (I think this icon is Hitch's Apollo and Midnighter. I also loved his Jenny Sparks!) Hitch was probably one of the better era's of Authority art.

I'm not very knowledgeable about art, but I like when comics adopt a style that looks almost like a painting. Snow By Night is a good example of this: http://www.snowbynight.com

What I dislike most is when comics try to copy an anime style without accounting for the differences between moving and static media, especially when they mimic anime that was drawn on a shoestring budget. Level 30 Psychiatry used to be the worst example I'd seen of that, although it's getting better. http://lvl30psy.thecomicseries.com/comics/first/

Least favorite: anime.

Most favorite: Everything not anime.

Anything clean is good. Cartoony is a bonus. Anything overly detailed is a turnoff.

it's funny you say you like the Persona series art because I think I'd count it as one of my least favorite. I HATE the gross gradient they put on all of their faces, it makes them look dead and flat.
