I can agree with this.

Once upon a time even my brother thought that fanfic was for "over obsessed people" when we were young and first discovered it. Now after I got really into it, we both talk about fic, he's a really big fan of some fics and neither of us see any problem with it.

Keeping it secret and hidden is only going to further the stigma. It's like exposure therapy. The more people see and get used to the idea that fandom is a thing people do, it won't be seen as so weird.

If a person is bothered that I'm wearing my Ravenclaw shirt when I got out to the mall or Target? They can cringe and complain about their second hand embarassment for me all they want. That's their problem. I'm not ashamed, and I'm not going to buy that I should be.

NAYRT

But... there's a big difference between a Ravenclaw shirt and your idfic

Okay, I'm not going to fucking overshare my fic with someone who doesn't know about it. I may ask a person who I know gives good writing advice if they're are interested in willing to help me with a fic in a way that is not disruptive or TMI (ask/PM first and wait for a positive response before proceeding. Which honestly I'd do for asking about an original work as well).

But I'm not going to claim I don't write fanfic or go out of my way to hide it either. I was talking more about not hiding fandom in general and not particularly specific fanfics.

What is it though? I mean they're both showing off things you like.

nayrt, but idfic is more about my kinks, which I don't actually want to share with everyone

I can see not wanting to personally, but for people who do... I mean ok, guy with a Star Wars shirt you can sit and analyze why the series appeals to him. Is it the heroes journey that resonates with the hopeful possibility that anyone no matter how insignificant seeming could secretly be the Chosen one? Or does he just like jerking off to girls with lekku?

I mean you could draw the comparison to nude beaches. You might never go there, but that doesn't mean others wouldn't enjoy it, and just because it's not for you doesn't mean it's inherently wrong and harmful for the nudists.
