I liked AC3 storywise a lot better than 4, too. Connor got to have real stakes and a lot of character progression. I didn't hate Edward or anything, but he didn't have much arc to speak of, just a lot of wandering around at random.

Yeaaa, and the thing is I actually liked the supporting cast in Black Flag. (Same for AC3, but since we're talking about strengths and I'm complaining about BF, I want to highlight the good in it too, lol.) Blackbeard was great and Mary Read is one of my favorite Assassin's characters. The problem that I have with Black Flag is that while it was a joy to play, the storyline was really slow. That isn't always a terrible thing, but I found it to be in this case; it took a good 3/4ths of the game for Edward to get any major character development. I spent the majority of the game thinking Edward was a massive shit and wondering when something was going to change for him; for a long time the plot felt completely aimless.

Now, I do LOVE that Mary's death is one of the things that leads him to realize, "Oh, there's more to life than this", and I thought the entire boat dream/hallucination sequence was absolutely gorgeous, extremely poignant and excellently written, but it came so late in the game that I couldn't help being disappointed.

I think in a way it worked since you get to the end and look back and think, "Wow, Edward wasted so much time." I think we were supposed to feel that way, but it was...unusual, to say the least.

For all people complain about Connor, I thought he was a much more likable, sympathetic and interesting character. Sometimes I think this fandom only wants to play as a wise-cracking womanizer (and I love Ezio, so this is not said out of hate or anything), so I think that worked against him.
