I think there's something wrong with the idea that you aren't happy or having fun with something if you're also working hard at it.

When I work hard I have high expectations that get crashed too often. Ehh, more on topic, fic writing is a hobby so the question is how much do you want to put into it - buying style guides and dictionaries and writing min 1000 words a day seems like a day job or University all over again. Drafting and re-drafting, finding beta, etc...
