If you're religious: what does your religion say about animals? Is there an animal heaven? Do animals have souls? How about insects or plants? Where is the cutoff for heavenly soulitude?

My religion (Christianity, no specific denomination) actually doesn't say much about animals at all so some people have their own beliefs about them. I like to believe that they have souls (or at least some of the higher/more closely related to humans ones do) but I don't feel too strongly about it. I do think of them as being generally good.

Also, I would like to add this, which is one of my favorite images I've ever seen on the internet:

Lol This made me smile. I love dogs. Who'd want to be in heaven if there were no animals?

That's amazing.

This topic makes me laugh too since it's how I came to be told I have no soul once. I was called an ass (this was about as serious as this very religious person's swearing got) and I thanked her and said I liked donkeys and that led into how animals don't have souls and neither do I.

We are the animals.

animals can not make moral decisions, so there is no meaning in an eternal judgment for them.

Therefore they get a free pass into Heaven.

Here is a prayer of St. Basil the Great that I found on an Orthodox (Christian) forum:

For those, O Lord, the humble beasts, that bear with us the burden and heat of day, and offer their guileless lives for the well-being of mankind; and for the wild creatures, whom Thou hast made wise, strong, and beautiful, we supplicate for them Thy great tenderness of heart, for Thou hast promised to save both man and beast, and great is Thy loving kindness, O Master, Saviour of the world.

I'll try to trace it down when I have more time.

That's beautiful :)

Oh dear...somebody did some heavy-duty research, and it turns out that it was written, not by St. Basil in the 4th century, but by a liberal Baptist minister in 1910.

I'm sad that I can't claim those words for a father of my own church, but they're still beautiful.

Seventh-Day Adventism does not say all that much about animals, but I do faintly recall a verse in the Bible that mentioned something "the lion will lay down with the lamb". That alone implies animals will be in Heaven* and predators will not hunt prey.

*Note on SDA doctrine: People are not in Heaven yet. They won't go to Heaven until after Judgment Day.

General attitude I grew up with is that Heaven will have animals and plants that people can spend time playing with. The animals will be peaceful, the plants will be lush and beautiful. No, I don't think plants have souls - they don't have brains. Animals have souls, but not with the same moral determination as humans, so they get a free pass as they are "innocent.

If I get to Heaven, I expect the meet all my cats again.
