You raise a good point. I don't truly think he has a chance at winning (Or even staying in the race for much longer) and there is certainly plenty of time for people to educate themselves on the candidates, but the fact that he's a frontrunner even this early is disheartening to me.

Like, maybe it is largely because people recognize the name, but I feel that anyone who recognizes his name should immediately jump to, “Not in a million years", not “Sure, why not?" Even if you only know him from celebrity apprentice or sound bites on the news... That should be enough, lol.

I guess it depends on what people want in a president and how they feel about politics and politicians in general. If your vague impression of Trump based on pop culture osmosis is of a successful business man who isn't afraid to say what he thinks then that could match up with what you're looking for in a president, especially if you're like a lot of people and have a image of politicians being weasels who'll say whatever it takes to get votes. For a lot of people it seems the main thing they're looking for this time around is "not a politician".

Though personally I hate the idea that what we need is someone with no experience related to the job they're trying to get. I don't buy that business success will translate to political acumen either. I don't want the leader of one party treating the other like a competing business.

But I can at least follow the logic of people who see some things they like in Trump and who have different things they care about in politics than I do.

I certainly understand the appeal of that attitude in a politician in and of itself, with wanting a politician who doesn't sound like they're reading from a script and saying all the "right" things (and varying what they say depending on who they speak to).

But at the same time, that doesn't mean that people can just spout whatever crap they want without getting flack for it, especially if what they say is stupid and/or flat out wrong. And people who are running for the highest office in the land do need to have some sort of filter and measure regarding what they say, too, simply because with the media being what it is and the job itself being what it is, and the sorts of people from other parts of the world they'll work with and encounter, it's kind of a necessity.

Besides that, if people think Trump isn't being calculated with some of the supposedly spontaneous and outrageous things he says, then they're REALLY naïve. Whether he's trolling or a serious politician, he's still putting on an act somewhere along the way.

tbh I roll my eyes at that argument because Bernie Sanders is doing it too, but nobody talks about that.

Heh, yeah, Bernie doesn't really have much of a filter, either, no. You're right that that should be covered more in the media, but I don't think the media at large takes him all that seriously as a candidate, and since he's not bringing the kind of cartoon vibe that Trump has, they don't see it as a viable story.

And if that doesn't sum up how pathetic our "professional" media is nowadays, I don't know what does.

Agreed. Having a filter is a good thing. But people like to turn everything into a dichotomy. You're either never saying what you think because you're too concerned with how people will react or you're bravely speaking your mind no matter what others think. I think celebrating that second one has gotten worse since rhetoric about PC-ness has gotten more popular, about how people are just waiting to attack if you use a word that sociology students have decided is offensive. Certain groups of people get focused on the PC enemy and get distracted from cases when you really do need some tact.

Or maybe my brain is making weird connections tonight.

Oh, you're absolutely right about that. People who like Trump "telling it like it is" are indeed often the same ones griping about how this country's gotten so "PC". And that's a whole other rant unto itself.

And you're also right about the dichotomy, too. I'm all for people being honest and saying what they really believe and think in and of itself, because I do think that is a necessary thing (even if what they say is offensive-at least in that case, you know that's how they genuinely feel and think, and can use that information going forward, there's less risk of being unpleasantly surprised or fooled as a result). But there's good ways to do that, and bad ways to do that. And Trump definitely falls into the "bad ways" example.

See, even if Trump's views didn't disgust me on a personal level, that's a pretty major one. I suppose from a standpoint of "Politicians are too calculated and insincere" I can...kinda get it (though not really, lol), but it doesn't make me like it.
