I've heard a lot of people justify it by saying that he didn't realise his feelings until he was faced with the possibility of losing her, but that doesn't make a lick of sense considering shortly before they go to fight Edea he left her hanging from the side of the Garden during a massive battle for like half an hour because he had more important stuff to do.

Honestly for the first two discs you could make a better argument that Squall has feelings for Zell than you can for Rinoa.

And yeah, it's skeevy the way everyone keeps pushing him to like her. Yeah, a relationship might be good for him, but it's not their place to constantly pressure him in to it.

As for FFVII, I agree, but just one super pedantic point: I don't think Cloud ever thought he was Zack, exactly. He just confused some of his life experiences for Zack's, which basically means he thought he was a lot cooler and more successful than he actually was. He thought he was the kind of person he wanted to be, which made him cocky and more self-confident, but otherwise he was largely the same person throughout the game (except when he was insane, of course). I think people tend to massively overstate how much of disc 1 Cloud was "fake".
