What is this?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-30 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Dragon Age: Inquisition.

That explains why I thought it was Dark Souls for a minute. DAI was really drawing a lot from the Souls series.

I know shit goes down in Dragon Age fandom but I guess I'm just not deep enough to see the worst of it. (And I have on occasion visited the BSN, lol.) *shrugs*

At any rate, I love the creativity of the fandom. Maybe some of them are batshit, but I manage to avoid the batshit so I still enjoy it.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-30 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
It was like that since DA2 iirc

(Anonymous) 2015-09-30 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
I love Dragon Age but have to ignore the fandom for my sanity's sake.

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2015-09-30 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
I think the studio is inviting wank myself.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-30 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
I was active in the DA fandom when Origins and even DA2 were out, but Solas/Lavellan (can one even exist without the other?) has completely sucked the joy out of it for me. I cannot deal with this huge blob who think Solas is the only character who exists, that female Lavellans who romance him are the only PCs that matter, and that all future content should center around them. I thought it was bad in DAO with the Queen Cousland crazies, but this is about 10 levels above that.

This is addition to all the other endless wank about asexuality, bisexuality, mods, race, whitewashing (in fanart, official art, and from concept to finished character) and even hair options. I've gotten regular anon hate for reblogging heavily tagged art and meta about certain characters on my own blog. It's just not worth it anymore.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-30 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
A lot of the Solavellan stans ARE the Queen Cousland crazies, from what I've seen. Check out their custom wardens and a lot of times it's the same OTT bullshit as their Lavellans are.

I think the reason f!Lavellan took off so hardcore in a way that even f!Cousland didn't is because Inquisition is damn near tailored to that origin more than any other. In DA:I if you aren't a Dalish mage you don't get shit, and f!Lavellans have the most romance options as well. DA:O has a bit more impact for Couslands and City Elves, but at least the other origins each played into the main storyline as well.

Plus, I think Zevran helped calm the fires a lot, just like Anders+Fenris are each fandom darlings and kept the stan force divided. In DA:I Blackwall and Cullen are too 'problematic' and their romances aren't mystical elven adventures with snowflakey gods so they don't attract the same stans.

I find the bitching about 'butch' Cassandra and the 'not as good as Origins/bring back the Warden/Bioware needs to remember it's mainstream audience' stuff the most tiresome.

Can I ask where you see all the crazy Solas stuff? Is it tumblr? I lurk the Solas thread on the BSN and it's nothing but theory discussion and blanket forts.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-01 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
Definitely tumblr, although some of the crazier stuff isn't tagged at all, you just have to be unfortunate enough to follow somebody who reblogs it.

The Solas thread is sometimes a little much for me, if only because it's also the Lavellan thread, and it's hard to get in there if you don't like the romance, or want to talk about Solas and his relationship with anyone besides Lavellan.

Thank you, I've been thinking this for a while now and Trespasser DLC only fanned the flames of obnoxious crazy.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-30 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
DA fans are some of the wankiest crazies ever. And I grew up in FFVII, KH, and Harry Potter fandom.

The worshipping of Solas/Lavellen is very discerning and Dalish fans make me believe how they're unstable when the start calling other people shems and talking about humans suck in a RL context.

Don't even get me started on the people who equate mage rights with real life oppression.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-04 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
"Don't even get me started on the people who equate mage rights with real life oppression."

Oh god, same. The "if you aren't 100% for complete mage freedom and abolishing the circles then you are a horrible person and I don't want to talk to you" attitude that runs rampant on Tumblr basically ran me out of the fandom.

i never see any of this wank, which is a good thing i suppose, but i'm still curious as to what DA's fandom has done that's so bad.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-30 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe it just seems worst because you are involved in it? Every fandom has it's own degree of drama.

There are some that are really bad because they are ridiculously popular. I wasn't really involved in Harry Potter, Sherlock, ATLA, or Supernatural fandoms but I still heard a lot of the shit that went down with them.

I haven't heard much wank reach out from this fandom you are talking about. I don't doubt it's going down but every fandom seems worst when you are stuck in the middle of it.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-30 06:00 am (UTC)(link)
Doesn't the secret imply that OP is deriving this comparison from personal experience of fandom horrors past?

(Anonymous) 2015-09-30 05:29 am (UTC)(link)
Dragon Age confuses me. I've never met a single person "IRL" who plays the game (out of the not-particularly tiny subset of my friends who play games and talk about it), but it seems to be a fandom juggernaut.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-30 09:53 am (UTC)(link)
I've never experienced any of this craziness, but I guess I'm not deep enough in the fandom. However, I have experienced the craziness of BBC Sherlock, Supernatural or Teen Wolf without even being in those fandoms. YMMV.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-30 10:10 am (UTC)(link)
Aww, I love the DAI fandom. But then, I never venture outside the Solas and Cole threads on the BSN unless I'm deliberately looking for wank and I'm too old for tumblr.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-30 11:45 am (UTC)(link)
I avoid the official forum and tumblr and have a grand old time in other spaces. But I guess since my interest in the fandom is largely in discussion, roleplaying, and fic writing/reading I'm content to stay out of those spaces.

r/dragonage isn't bad for discussion. There's a r/thedaslore for more indepth world stuff. There's a handful of decent roleplay communities out there for various time periods in dragon age. Ao3 (and to a lesser degree ff.net) are where I get my fic fix.

You really can avoid the crazies. You certainly have to avoid tumblr and the official forum though.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-30 03:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Dragon Age and WWE fandom are two of the worst online. It makes me so sad people can't just get along and be nice.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-30 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man, yeah. Bioware fandoms tend to be the wankiest out of the whole bunch.

There are some really good parts of fandom, so if you just stick to them, it can be a great experience.

But there are definitely a lot of places best avoided. I've actually found my few times poking into the BSN to be far worse than my corner of the world on Tumblr.
