As someone who stays long term in fandoms (think 3-10 years) you're living the dream. You have fun, you miss out on drama and you always have things to read. You don't deal with bullshit like a BNF bullying you because you accidentally pissed them off or other mean girls bullshit straight out of a high school. I'd say your method is really ideal. I'd love to do that, because as someone on the complete other side of the scale (long term person who writes a lot of pieces and does a lot for the fandom) it really isn't worth it in amounts of time devoted and what you actually get back.
