Talking to people who have a deep knowledge of canon actually makes me nervous because I feel that my arguments are weak in comparison or that these people, the ones who know everything there's to know in the fandom, have very strong ideas about what is what and are not to be swayed or argued with.

Of course the other thing is that I'm awful in memorizing details so I don't feel like an expert even in fandoms where there's not much to learn to begin with. It's similar to how you read something and 'grok' it, understand it, but as you're telling about it to someone else you can't recall any actual points an author's made. While some people are very good at the stracturing and the analysing of the info - or at least are sure of their facts.
