[Avengers: Age of Ultron]

Marvel has really lost a sense of what makes Clint tick, even in the comics. It's a shame.

He's not supposed to be either a government agent or an assassin! He's supposed to be circus people, kind of a glory-seeker, and a bit goofy!

I'm really disappointed in how they handle him now. :(

"He's supposed to be circus people, kind of a glory-seeker, and a bit goofy!" Think that depends on (like 95% of superheroes) what comic run you read.

MCU!Hawkeye is as bland as oatmeal, which is a travesty because 616!Hawkeye is a fun doof. I don't get the appeal of movie Hawkeye or why so many people have latched onto him.

It probably doesn't help that Jeremy Renner is a potato/pug face with an abhorrent personality.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-01 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I kind of like Jeremy Renner. I just think the scripts treat Clint badly. He's too much a generic SHIELD guy.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-02 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Renner gives off such a douche vibe though. I didn't have a problem with the "she's a slut" joke because it seemed like he was joking, but then he made a smug insincere apology, and then insisted a woman sleeping with several men makes her a slut :/

(Anonymous) 2015-10-02 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know. Renner always seem pretty generic and bland to me, and then the "slut" jokes about Black Widow came out and now all I see is douchey frat boy.

It's the arms. He has nice arms.

Renner is also a really bad actor who ruins everything he's in. He's always playing himself.

Totally agree

(Anonymous) 2015-10-01 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. I wouldn't miss him at all if they made him disappear. I hate Jeremy Renner and his face, and the character he plays is the blandest and most boring character I've ever seen.

Urgh. I'm even annoyed by how frequently he appears in fanfic. I'd prefer if fic authors just ignored his (and Natasha's and Coulson's) existence and focused only on Bruce, Tony, Steve, Bucky, Thor, Loki and Pepper.

It'll be all over soon. The superhero movie bubble will pop eventually, and then we will be left with the Hawkeye 2012 comic. Then everything will be alright.

Yeah people keep telling themselves it'll last forever and that naysayers don't know what they're talking about, but damn if Age of Ultron didn't suck so hard I'm not really all that invested in future Avengers flicks.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-01 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
There was a time -- I think late 2009 or early 2010 -- when I was convinced Jeremy Renner was The Next Big Thing. Funny how things changed. Too bad I didn't realize that before buying tickets to that Hansel and Gretel witch movie :-|

(Anonymous) 2015-10-02 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
Except what you really mean is, you are so glad you got to see that great cinematic masterpiece on the big screen.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-01 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Couldn't agree with you more, OP.

Renner is too full of himself to play the character satisfactorily. MCU version Clint is...grim, boring, and petering on soulless depiction. Lose that depiction, we still have Renner dragging things down. Lose Renner, we still have awful characterization to slog through.

Really, the only solution is to kill off Hawkeye Clint Barton and introduce Hawkeye Kate Bishop. Assuming TPTB that can do justice to her character, and don't resort to the same irritating quirky-quipping mess they force on any character we're expected to like.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-02 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I assume MCU Hawkeye's popular because he has no personality, so it's easier for writers to project anything they want onto him. Never understood the raving over him though, Renner is a hideous pug faced manlet.

That's probably why they've never done a movie with him either. Honestly, when people compare him to Green Arrow they've got it all wrong. Ollie's got more in common with Iron Man.

See, even in the Arrow TV show where I didn't really like Ollie at all, he still has way more personality and presence than Clint. I'd rather watch him and get annoyed at him than watch Clint and be vaguely bored.

Worked for Coulson.

I was really surprised that people liked Clint more after AoU because AoU just made him more bland. I enjoyed him before that because I could just imagine him being interesting, but now? Nah, just boring.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-02 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
I'm dreaming of the day when the Young Avengers gets a TV show and Clint gets to hang out with Kate Bishop.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-02 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I thought the Farm thing was annoying too.

(Anonymous) 2015-10-02 06:40 am (UTC)(link)
Just based on the movies alone, Hawkeye isn't really given much to do therefore he comes off as bland because he just...exists. If he was given more action, dialogue, even some minute importance to the plot, I think he'd be a more interesting character. The inclusion of the family in AoU seemed forced to me; I felt like it was a last minute insertion to explain an aspect of his character that didn't seem to exist prior to AoU.

I adored MCU Hawkeye from the moment he showed up in Thor, but I don't argue with you about Age of Ultron. They thought it would be interesting to show one character who didn't have a fucked-up homelife, and that left Clint by default, and I thought it did nothing for the character.

I get unreasonably defensive about Hawkeye but for some reason this secret just had me sighing and saying, "Pretty much."

(Anonymous) 2015-10-02 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)
But Jeremy Renner is YUMMY!
