Re: Expressions you've used wrong/thought meant something else

I used to think "burning the midnight oil" referred to staying up all night talking to someone, possibly with drinks involved.

Also, I didn't use the expression itself wrong, but it took me years to understand where fandom got the term "ships" from. I thought it was just quirky. Then I was explaining fandom to my sister, mentioned ships, and she was all "oh, ships! Like relationship!"

... d'oh.
