I think you're ignoring the context in which Morrissey first started singing, and I don't think he's changed his schtick.

There were openly out singers then, but it was the sort of thing that put you into gay club music on the one side or the women's festival circuit on the other.

For sure. The Smiths sure as hell weren't looking to pigeonhole themselves that way. Whether Morrissey has a non-normative sexuality or not, queerbaiting wouldn't have made sense in the 80s for the Smiths, and I don't think he's started doing it now.

Jimmy Somerville got a number one hit! That said you're still not entirely wrong. & it took a surprisingly amount of time for the Pet Shop Boys to come out.
