I'm in a bit of a rut.

I work in city/county government. It's a small, rural area and things can get pretty slow. A lot of the work I do can take forever. I'm not the most patient person in the world, and I feel like I spend a lot of time waiting. And waiting. And waiting.

But the thing is, when work does come my way, I love it. I got to explain the requirements for a zoning district today to two people, and we ended up talking about their horses and where they ride. A lawyer came in with a plat to be approved, and he and I can talk for hours. He's one of my regulars. He reads my short stories, and we both love to travel. I approve signs in the city and county, and there's one old dude who never fails to flirt. I'm supposed to get the final word on a grant approval next week and the SCDOT engineer said he's 99.9% certain my request will be funded. Not that I'm counting unhatched chickens, but $400,000 and showing City Council that we can make the city more walkable and bikeable without blowing the bank would be a big ol' win for me. I'm working on another grant and they WANT us to apply.

I'm thinking that rather than planner, downtown business vitality manager or grant writer would be a better job title for me, but I'm not sure.

Well my contract for my current job isn't going to get picked up long term which means I need to start looking for another gig. And the thing is I'm actually pretty confident I can get a dramatically better job - but job hunting still blows real hard.

I hate job hunting too :( but with the outlook you have I hope it goes well! It will be so worth it in the end if you score the job you're going after!

Learned when I transferred a couple weeks ago that in a few months I might have the opportunity to cross-train in some related areas, expanding my skillset and earning a raise in the process :)

I also learned from someone higher up where I used to work that they might eventually implement a program that would let people in my position earn a certification for some basic positions you would ordinarily have to go to school for via on-the-job training. That's nebulous and wouldn't happen for several years, though, and I might not still be here - but it would be really cool. (School really isn't on my agenda right now since I'm in a bunch of student debt plus also this particular program is rigorous enough to make it hard to work full time along with it.)

I work at a Jo-Ann fabric/craft store, and I do enjoy the job; it pays my bills, I like working with creative things and my coworkers are all great-- but I'm finding myself wanting more for sure. I slacked off like hell when I went to college straight out of a high school and I never ended up with a degree, but I did have a heavy interest in geology, so I'm kind of poking around on the internet lately to see if anything good might come out of going back to school and going with something in the field. I'm not sure yet, though. Definitely a risky move, if I do.

Trundling along, I'm in some sort of weird job that is 25% IT admin/programmer, 25% report writing 25% project management and, soon, 25% graphics/design.

Serves me right for showing interest in things.

Nah is good, have yet to decide on a direction and if I want to stay with this team or transfer elsewhere (and probably get a pay rise but not as much opportunities to be a jack of all trades)

Working too much right now. I'm barely making money but am gaining lots of valuable experience for an eventual career in the same field. Though sometimes I feel like I'm losing track of things because there's so much I have to worry about right now.
