So long as the cat isn't silly enough to cross the road

isn't this the main reason people advocate against outdoor cats? Because I gotta say, it's a biggie. Both for the cat and the driver.

A friend of mine whose mother is really a crazy cat lady (like 14 at a time) likes to say that most cats who get hit are old and/or sick or very young and stupid, which has been my experience. In all the time living here I've only seen maybe two cats get killed that way, a kitten and an old guy. My mother lives in terror of it though. If I could adopt I'd go for an older cat with more sense and good health. And I've never met a feral that got in the way of cars when there are backyards to go through.

well as someone who has lived with a crazy cat lady (my mom had 29 cats and one point.TWENTY NINE. Thankfully, she's better now and just down to one), we had several that were hit by cars.

but hey, you know your area better than i do.

In all the years my partner has had cats that roamed outside, the only two that got hit were deaf and a young and stupid one. The young and stupid one is recovering after an operation on her leg (she was playing chicken with a car OMG). The other two of hers that died were killed by idiots letting their savage pighunting dogs out at night. Most of her free range cats died of old age.
