I went to a university where all dorms were co-ed and only one dorm had single-gender floors (the rest could have a room of women next to a room of men). I was once talking to a guy who was a friend of a friend and was an RA. He mentioned he was so happy not to have been assigned to that dorm because apparently the male-only floors were disgusting pits of despair. At that time, I had a job in a fast food restaurant and when I had to clean the bathrooms, the men's room was always gross - grafitti on the walls, paper towels all over the floor. The women's room might have maybe one scrap of toilet paper on the floor and that was it.

So, all I have to say about male-only spaces is that they are probably pretty messy and I'm not cleaning up after them.

I remember my uni once had a photo exhibit of the male toilet graffiti vs the female toilet graffiti in the student union basement. They were like anon type communities. I loved the female toilet graffiti; full of really interesting long-winded debates and advice threads I often took part in. The male toilet graffiti was full of LOL U GAY FAGGOT and just generally disgusting braindead insulting behaviour.

That seems strange to me. My Dad's part of the support staff at the local college, and *all* the janitors agree, hands down, that the various women's washroom s are the filthiest places in the whole campus. It just seems odd to me that your experience was so wildly different.

Same, omg, our girls' only dorm was well known on campus for having the most disgusting bathrooms ever. Like, dropping used tampons on the floor and leaving them there disgusting. I knew a girl that lived there that chose to use the public bathrooms in the cafeteria building rather than ever use them.

Never ever seen this in my country (or any other), neither has my partner O__O. Used tampons. Ew. That's a biohazard. What the actual fuck, women?

The few times I've been in men's toilets, I've noted them for their general rank smell and detritus, though that might be country Australia for you.

Gonna add in my two cents about bathrooms since I worked for about a year at a restaurant where I regularly cleaned both. The men's room tended to smell worse though I don't remember if the air freshener worked in there so it might have been that. (I do think men's bathrooms sometimes smell worse in general based on some other experienced but idk.) The men's room was more likely to be messy, but if there was a mess in the women's room, it was usually a BIGGER mess. Like women are taught more growing up to be neat, but the ones who still don't know how periods work can really fuck it up for everyone. And the ones who can't be arsed to clean up their pee after they hover.

The men's room always had dirt all over the sinks because we got a lot of construction workers coming in for their lunch breaks. It was hard to complain though because I was glad they washed their hands before they ate XD

The only major problem I had cleaning the men's room was a couple weird guys who either a) didn't understand that it wasn't ok to just waltz in and start peeing while I was cleaning (I'm female) or b) didn't respond when I knocked on the door and said I was coming in. Luckily they were both in stalls.

I... would never consider that a bathroom wasn't open to pee in just because someone was cleaning? unless there's a sign on the door or something, I'd probably go in and do my business too... the gender of the cleaner wouldn't factor into my decision if I needed to use the bathroom.

from having been a student politician at an Australian University (some time back, now), where I ended up papering posters in both male and female toilets across the campus, I can attest that how revolting the toilets are differs dramatically by faculty as well as gender.

The worst were the male lawyers toilets, which smelled like everyone just pissed on the walls.

You were a student politician too? I never postered in the male toilets though, ah perhaps once, I shared the position with a dude...

Interesting about differing standards, isn't it. I don't get it, why would your hygiene levels differ so much unless it's what one person started and others just followed suit...

yup. on the Aust West Coast. We were fighting VSU, which should date me pretty murkily (there were at least two phases of that battle that I remember).

I remember being really surprised by it - there was a large lawyers vs engineers rivalry, with the lawyers basically being all holier-than-thou about how much more civilised they were than the engineers. And then I went through pretty much every toilet on campus, and never believed the lawyers about how awful the engineers were again (not that I was very convinced before, as I shared a lot of lectures with engineers).

The women's toilets all smelled different, but I'm willing to believe that that was probably a 'who was last in here with spray deodorant' thing.

Oh VSU! Yeah we were around that scene at roughly the same time though I was in Melbourne. Crazy times.

That's pretty amusing about the lawyer/engineer rivalry. I did software engineering and my partner did law. :D
