Re: Problematic Opinion Thread

I just feel like framing this entire comment and hanging it on my wall.

How is this even a problematic opinion? This is just decent common sense.

You'd be surprised. There are a lot of places where saying anything against the idea of the "cure" gets lots of angry negative reactions.

Sometimes even saying you personally wouldn't want one could get you angry reactions depending on how carefully you word it.

My experience is quite a lot of it is non autistic people going on about some severely autistic relative as a reason to berate you for questioning the cure, or their idea of it.

Also I'm quite disturbed by seeing people talking about wanting to "hold their autistic relative down if they have to so they can get a "cure" to make them normal. and it's almost always "so me/other people don't have to suffer".

ugh, that's creepy and disgusting.

idk, mainly because i teach kids with disabilities (including kids with autism), and yeah, some of them have severely limited quality of life due to it...

but a lot of the rhetoric that you're describing just sounds like eugenics updated for the 21st century. sanitized and made palatable.

interesting how it's all about the relative's discomfort. no one ever really asks about the opinion of the autistic person.

even if their behaviours are sometimes strange or you can't understand them, doesn't mean they're not human. FFS.

Eyyup. Funny how they're always calling others selfish.
