Re: Stuff That's Annoying You

How is this playing out in practical terms?

I'm curious because in a long-running mystery series I've been getting into, avarice is the besetting vice of one of my favorite side characters. (Snobbery is a close second.) I still love her because it's easy to see where this would come from: she's a freed slave in the community of gens libre de couleur in the 1830s, so there's nothing assured about her status or her comfortable life.

Not sure if you'll ever get this but it's a pretty regular fantasy setting and the character himself is a dwarf, who used to be a travelling salesman but now is a roaming adventurer trying out different jobs for himself to find his place in life. Butreally livelihood is not that hard to come by. The greed has gotten to the point where he'll actively try to manipulate other player characters out of their money (despite the fact that all of them are willing to share basic supplies such as food) and will berate anyone who persuades him to give away money (like there was a place where we were in a collective dream and had to give offerings to a god, and he was angry about it, even though he knew the money we were giving wasn't real).

So no, there really isn't a very definite reason in game why he would be /this/ greedy.

Could it be a throwback to Tolkien's portrayal of the dwarves in The Hobbit? IIRC, there was a strong suggestion that greed--the flip side of their love of gold and gems for their sheer beauty, and their pride in the works of their own hands--was the besetting sin of dwarves in general.

I guess, although I know the player and I am not sure if they would think it that way. Anyway, it is indeed quite Tolkien-esque. I'm personally just looking forward to if he ever gets his comeuppance on that, cos right now the only people to suffer from his vice are the other characters who either get yelled at or conned out of their money.
